7th August 1994 The Ground Breaking  Ceremony  A Diocesan Service  in an Incomplete Cathedral

St. Andrew's Church that later became St. Andrew's Cathedral was initially started as a local congregation Church.   With time, the Hall became too small for the growing congregation.  In order to address the need for a worship  place that could accommodate the growing congregation, in 1997 the Late Canon Ven. Samson Njuguna who was the Vicar at the time appointed a Building Committee to work out modalities of building a Church with a capacity of about 1,000. By 1st July, 1998  when the new Diocese of Thika was created, the foundation for the new Church building had already been laid and a slab had been put in place'.St. Andrew's Church had already been earmarked as the best site for the location of the new Diocesan headquarters and hence Diocesan Pro- Cathedral in 1998 by the ACK Provincial Commission that had recommended the creation of the new Diocese.

On 31st January 1999, the consecration of the First Bishop of the new Diocese of Thika, the Rt. Rev. Dr. Gideon Githiga was conducted on the slab of the proposed Chur ch construction. Thereafter the Bishop advised the Building Committee through the Parish Council to adjust the architectural drawings in order to come up with a Cathedral. The Church building that was initially planned to accommodate 1,000 worshippers was then extended to cater for a congregation of 2,500- 3,000.
